Hon Margaret Miller
Halifax & Hants East, Nova Scotia
Dear minister Miller,
My name is Shelly Hipson and I am from a small fishing community called Atlantic, just 20 minutes from Shelburne.
Today I am forwarding you our submission that we made to the Department of Aquaculture, on behalf of hundreds of residents in our community who have expressed concern about an application from Kelly Cove Salmon/Cooke Aquaculture to move their operations into the inner basin of Shelburne Harbour. As well, below, you will find a link to a survey that is being done in our community about this issue.
We are questioning how government has determined that this is a renewal. Who is accountable for doing this? It appears obvious to us, that these are NEW sites.
When the trout were being caught in our area, we learned that your department was responsible for enforcement.
According to a CFIA report, trout in Nova Scotia had a reportable disease and we questioned the Aquaculture Department about this. However, we received no response. This is not transparency.
Thus, it seems important to us, to let everyone know how we feel about this pollution and what is happening here at the local level.
As of today, 329 people in Nova Scotia and our community have responded to a survey. We have asked people their point of view about the salmon farm industry and the application.
Here is a link to the survey results: https://www.surveymonkey.net/results/SM-M3H2DFQM/
PLEASE, we kindly ask you to take a moment to review. It will only take you 60 seconds to see that people are concerned about the dead zones and pollution that this industry is creating.
We hope that we can count on your interest in this matter. As Minister of the Environment, we know that you know that pollution…is pollution.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
