The open net salmon cages recently installed in St. Mary’s Bay, Nova Scotia by New Brunswick-based multinational Cooke Aquaculture suffered “quite a bit of damage” in the recent storm in the area, according to residents there. Karen Crocker and her husband operate a lobster fishing and summer tour business in the area and Crocker says last Friday her husband brought in a large cage net that he hauled up while fishing outside the aquaculture lease area. “Many bird nets are gone and there are lots of dead fish floating in the cages.”

“We were again concerned about salmon escapes,” Crocker said, “and we did notify DFO and Nova Scotia Fisheries and Aquaculture.” Crocker added, “The damage here is caused by average winter winds, giving validity to the concerns expressed previously by of fishermen and community that this was not a good location for this industrial site.”
