Senior executive Laurie Jensen of Mainstream Canada assured attendees at a recent open house that that infectious salmon anemia (ISA) “is an East Coast disease” and that tests in BC have not  shown any record of it. Jensen compared maintaining fish health in feed lot sized fish farms was “like growing carrots” or removing “sick kids in a daycare.”image

Mainstream Canada, one of the worlds largest aquaculture companies, wants to build a new 56-hectare salmon farm in the sensitive coastal ecosystems in Clayoquot Sound in British Columbia There are 22 open net salmon feedlots in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve at Clayoquot Sound. Local environmental groups say the massive new proposal, located less than a kilometre away from a thriving Chinook spawning river, could have devastating impacts on the region’s already stressed wild salmon stocks.
