Nova Scotia Aquaculture Minister Sterling Belliveau

In an interview on Information Morning CBC Halifax Thursday, Nova Scotia Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Sterling Belliveau exlpained hs reasoning for approving two industrial open-net salmon farms on Saint Mary’s Bay near lucrative lobster fishing grounds. Many opposition groups have spoken out against the salmon farms and members of the St. Mary’s Bay Coastal Alliance say that Belliveau’s assurances about the scientific justification for approving the project and his comments about robust public discussion are simply not supported by the facts.

Most of the major ecology and salmon preservation groups in the region opposed the project, some citing significant scientific evidence that the massive fish pens might harm the other fisheries in the area and/or leade to environmental degradation.
