Changes under the surface of the world’s oceans, bays and harbours are not easy to see, but the effects of industrial fishing, pollution, and climate change are having a major impact on our oceans. Citizens and organizations the world over are working through a variety of approaches to ensure that our oceans, bays and harbours are well managed and protected.
In Nova Scotia, where the Canadian multinational Cooke Aquaculture has aggressive plans for expansion into several coastal communities, citizens and environmental groups have been raising questions about the damage done to the bays, harbours and coastal communities by large, open-net, industrial aquaculture operations in the region.
